Despite the intermittent heavy rains, we enjoyed 3 different parades of baby elephants (up to 3 years old). The two main causes of elephant orphaning are drought and human interference, babies as young as 2 days old have been saved. They start their return to the wild around 3 years old, and are closely monitored until adopted by a herd in the wild. Once we discovered the covered deck, we were able to view a little more comfortably during the heavy rains. Then we found a great view for the parade off to the side to catch the first and parting glimpses of the elephants comings and goings. The babies squealed with joy as they ran down to the workers holding bottles of milk for their feedings. Once fed, the elephants played in the mud and piled up on top of each other – it was just like watching our kids play at home. Eventually one on the bottom would get annoyed and throw a fit! On the parade out of the feeding areas, several elephants stopped by for petting – which was like rubbing your hand in a dirt puddle – and they gave us some cute shots of our first animal butts in Africa!
Bonus: you can adopt a baby elephant at the website - fun gift for an animal loving friend or family member!
