We found interactive museums in both Vina Del Mar, Chile, and Buenos Aires, Argentina! They were all fun! In fact, one we went to in Buenos Aires had a big sign upon entry that said “Prohibited NOT to touch”. Of course, these were big wins with the kiddos, and a terrific way to spend a few hours!
At all the interactive museums we went to most of the signs were in Spanish – some of this was bypassed because it was obvious what should be done at different exhibits, we also had friends who could translate for us in Argentina, and then there is google translate…
Did you know there is a cool feature in google translate that allows you to hover the phone over a sign and it translates it right there? It’s so cool! I accidentally discovered this at the first interactive museum we went to in Vina Del Mar, and it saved the day – we were able to do even more interactive exhibits because of this slick feature. *it also helped with menus, signs, and so much more throughout the whole trip! It’s a small icon in the bottom right when I pull up Spanish-English Google Translate – it’s called Google Lens, I think – haven’t tested other languages.
So, I learned about the 1st interactive museum we went to by reading a few blogs by families who travel with kids – Artequin was recommended by all of them! On the day we chose to venture to this museum, we successfully ordered an UberXL to take all of us to the address provided for the museum. We had fun driving through town and picked out several places we had walked by the day before. The driver pulled up to what looked like a closed outdoor market (lots of empty stalls) and said, Ciao! We were a bit confused at first, but started walking up through the empty stalls and found this amazing museum tucked into the back of the property. You can see from the collages, there was as much creative outdoor fun as the exhibits inside. It was a fun morning working through the interactive exhibits to excite all the senses – success!
The other two interactive museums we went to were in Buenos Aires on the 2nd leg of our trip. They were also very cool – the Natural History Museum wasn’t full on play, but had several interactive elements, like the fossil dig area and the fingerprint exhibit.
However, the Interactive Science Museum was made for play! The sign at the front instructed all visitors that they were “prohibited not to touch”! (This was important to point out to one of our kiddos whi is a rule follower) Room after room of science fun – it was so cool! We’ve seen similar things in different cities in the US, but this one was so packed with exploratory goodness! Enjoy the photos... Artequin = pink and yellow collages, Museo Participativo de Ciencias = black collages, Natural History museum = blue collage
We actually scouted out several other museums that seemed to be interactive in nature, but we just didn't have time to explore them all!
