?? Burundi - I am glad I was able to share a glimpse of the Bujumbura, Burundi, with you - thanks for following the travel blog so far. Before we move on to the last stop of our trip to Africa, I wanted to share some ways that we as Americans (or anyone in my global network) can help the small, land-locked, poor nation in central Africa.

During our many conversations with Melanie on this trip, she mentioned interactions with NGOs active in Burundi, as well as efforts that she has supported and laid the groundwork for through her role as US Ambassador in Burundi. She told us about a Belgian doctor she met who is now an expert on hippo attack wounds (blunt-force trauma - the crush of a hippo bite - often mid-section), she told us about joyful and hopeful ribbon-cuttings, and many more. I find this activity as promise for the future of Burundians! I believe that lifting up Burundians, will ultimately help the whole world - it's a small world, after all!

If you have some extra money, time, or connections to other resources, then consider the following organizations that Melanie recommended. I plan to consider a contribution to these orgs in the coming months, as well as continue to tell stories of my time in Burundi to raise awareness of the long road ahead for Burundians.

Kibuye Hope Hospital: American doctors living and working in the world's poorest country, helping patients, and teaching Burundi's next generation of doctors.
This faith-based community does amazing work for the people in their region.

Catholic Relief Services: An NGO doing reconciliation, school feedings, and other programs in Burundi

IRC: A great organization helping refugees and vulnerable populations in Burundi.
